Lady of Ten Thousand Names: Goddess Stories from Many Cultures
Burleigh Muten
ages: 8 - 12 years old
Spirit, multicultural mythsA great primer for young children, particularly young girls to get a solid, truly multicultural overview of the goddess myths. Some are familiar and some will be new.
"Eight myths present the common theme of the powerful goddess while highlighting differences in the folklore of various cultures. Kuan Yin (Chinese), White Buffalo Woman (Lakota), Oshun (Yoruba), and Cerridwen (Welsh) are among the figures whose stories are retold here. The retellings read well and retain details that make them appear to be accurate, although in the retelling of Persephone, Hades does not trick her with the pomegranate seeds-she makes the conscious decision to eat them, having considered the consequence. Yoga Kids (video)
starring: instructor Marsha Wenig, et. al.
(ages 3 and up)I enjoy this 30-minute video because it focuses on animals to introduce the poses. Time spent viewing each animal really helps the child make the association. It appears to tone the inner and outer self. This means that children can learn an ancient art in a modern format on their favorite medium, TV. This video even includes lessons on breathing, balance and relaxation. The best thing about this video is Jessica chose it and does it by herself. Adults without prior knowledge of yoga will enjoy this video. The only real caution, it does include a move that involves the headstand -- you decide if your child should do this move.
