A fun, informative book. This book is recommended for children 9-12; however, with the help of a parent, one could start many of these exercises at 5 or 6 years of age. The introduction is wordy, but the exercises have great, easy-to-follow photos with good tips on breathing. This book is great for parents who want to learn to do yoga. (174 pages) |
Like a Fish
in Waterby Isabelle Koch (ages 6 and up) This book has an introduction by Laurent de Brunhoff (author of Babar). The book uses poetry to introduce the true spirit of India and yoga to young children. A bit wordy, but great if you wish to add visualization to your yoga exercises; for example "I am a cat which adores stretching itself in all directions," or I am a cobra and I am sliding along on the desert sand." Fly Like a Butterfly:
Yoga for Children by Shakta Kaur Khalsa (ages 6 and up) At first glance the book appears wordy and detailed. Then you realize that it has simple to follow instructions and good explanations of postures, breathing, meditation and more. It even includes games and exercises for twosomes -- so he can do it with another child or with you. This book is best for those who are relatively dedicated to learning yoga. A great book for parents who wish to learn yoga with their children. (126 pages) |
The Lion Who Had Asthmaby Jonathan London (ages 4-8) Amazon.com avg. customer rating 4-star asthma - understanding and tolerance (for those with or without asthma) This book was inspired by the author's desire to help his son relax, which "makes being sick easier to bear and to control". He encourages us to use a child's imagination as "an asset in the treatment of asthma (and) life itself." We found it to be a cheerful, creative way to help a child with asthma and to introduce asthma to children who do not experience it. The introduction and text help us to better understand the illness and tools used to control it. |

Imagine That:
A Child's Guide to Yoga by Kenneth K. Cohen (ages 4-8) Dedicated to Sri Swami Satchidananda, this is a delightful, easy-to-understand picture book for a child first learning yoga. It teaches children simple yoga poses using terms and pictures from nature like, "dance to the sun," "grasshopper," "lotus flower," and "tree." It also gives simple help for breathing and meditation exercises. (48 pgs) |
I enjoy this 30-minute video because it focuses on the animals to introduce the poses. Time spent viewing each animal really helps the child make the association. It appears to tone the inner and outer self. This means that children can learn an ancient art in a modern format on their favorite medium, TV. This video even includes lessons on breathing, balance and relaxation. The best thing about this video is Jessica chose it and does it by herself. The only real caution, it does include a move that involves the headstand -- you decide if your child should do this move.
