Books Children Love: A Guide to the Best Children's Literature
Elizabeth Wilson
ages: adult bibliographic reference (classics and more popular books)
(avg. Amazon.com customer rating 5-star)

This is a good reference for homeschoolers because it is organized by subject and literature level. I recommend it for those looking for quality reading of the more traditional, classic type. (330 pages)

Honey for A Child's Heart: The Imaginative Use of Books in Family Life
Gladys Hunt
ages: adult bibliographic reference (Christian, classics, traditional)
Average Amazon.com customer rating 5-star

Honey for a Child's Heart, is now in its third edition. It has a warm and practical introduction about introducing quality books to and inspiring the love of reading in children. This edition includes an indexed and updated 85-page list of the best children's classics ever organized by age. The author also includes a chapter on her memories of reading from the bible. This is a good reference for those looking for a more traditionally recommended reading list for children of all ages. It may be appreciated most by those looking for reading lists composed by someone with a Christian perspective.

Homeschooling The Early Years
Linda Dobson
Parents - as -teachers

This is a good guide for parents starting or wanting to enhance their home school experience of their three- to eight-year old child. It offers good references and resources to build a curriculum and related activities.

 National African-American Homeschoolers Alliance

This site targets nonsectarian African-American homeschooling families, but is excellent for anyone starting or looking for programs and resources to home school their child.
It is also good for parents who do not home school but understand that as their child's first and primary resource they are parent-teachers.

Religions Explained: A Beginner's Guide to World Faiths
Anita Ganeri, Rev. Marcus Braybrooke, Consultant
ages: 9-12/adult reference
Multicultural - world religions

Of the many books that explain the world religions I have found this to be the most comprehensive and comprehensible. There are lots of color graphics, symbols and several pages dedicated to each of the major world religions and brief explanations of the less widely known religions, such as Sikhism, Jainism, the spirit religions of South and North America, Africa, and Australasia, and "new" religions such as Rastafarianism and Bahaism and the Hare Krishna and New Age movements. Overviews explain the basic beliefs, scriptures, methods of worship, and festivals of each religion without comparison. A glossary helps give even more understanding to frequently used terms and symbols.

Navigators: African American Musicians, Dancers, and Visual Artists in Academe (Suny Series, the Social Context of Education)
Theresa Jenoure
age: adult reference (teachers)

Navigators vividly brings to life the stories of twelve African-American artists who teach music, dance, and visual arts at colleges and universities that have traditionally been viewed as White institutions. In this captivating and moving book, Theresa Jenoure shows that there's a great deal to be learned from the experience of these teachers. She explores their visions and callings as creative artists and how they function in higher education. In so doing, she presents relevant ideas about the development and sustenance of creativity.
About the Author

Theresa Jenoure is the Director of Augusta Savage Gallery and the Coordinating Director of Multicultural Programs at the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She also teaches at the university and at the Graduate School of Arts and Science, Creative Arts in Learning Program at Lesley College.

Nature, ecology

This is a good site for students and teachers. Web workshops, videos and more. Lots of free stuff to download ("download Adobe Acrobat versions of the lesson plans that accompany our video library. You can preview these files to learn more about the information discussed on our tapes"), including material for class lessons and more. Series include "What's It Like Where you Live": Biomes, Freshwater Environments, Marine Environments; The Biology of Plants, The Environment; Life Habitats Video Series: The Secret of the Pond - The Food Chain, The Puzzle of the Rotting Log - Decomposition and Decomposers, What's In Your Backyard? - Discoveries Are Made Anywhere, The Story of the Woodland Stream - The Water Cycle, Life in the City Habitat - Organisms Survive in the City, Down on the Forest Floor. FYI, I downloaded the one on Biomes in less than a minute and found it to be a very informative outline with ideas for activities and ways to promote discussion with students.
