It will help children understand how each of us is received not just by our family, but by the universe and its gentle ways. Older children will enjoy the story, illustrations and references to migrating animals. A glossary in the back of the book gives a good understanding of each migrating animal mentioned in the book. Like all children, Jessica likes to hear the story about the day she was born. A fun story about dragons and a brave little girl who figures out how to solve a problem so that everyone wins. Although the story is a bit contrived, it is a good book to use when discussing conflict resolution. Amazon.com customer rating 5-star) In a simply told tale children learn the value of truth. All the children of the land are given seeds to grow for the old emperor; unbeknownst to them the seeds are incapable of germinating. Ping is chosen to be the next emperor when he is the only one who has the courage to come before the ruler with the truth and, an empty pot. It is a good conversation starter about the truth, not fooling others and how, in the end, lies are almost always uncovered. I like it because it inspires creativity and as a reminder that we can make our own toys and cherish them as much if not more than ones purchased. Jessica loves to repeat the question and answer together, "Mama Do you love me" and "How Long" ,throughout the day and years since we first read it. We even use it as a reference when she is misbehaving -- as I remind her that inside is the Jessica we know and love, not the "polar bear" she is being, so she should find herself and bring her out again. I believe this is a book that can be read to a child in the cradle, then enjoyed by both of you as the child grows. You may also enjoy the video which brings this story to life and gives more detail about the life of the Alaskan Inuits. Jessica loves this one before bed because it is so warm and relaxing. I understand that the DVD of this book has an interactive game on it -- that we have not tried.
