Lovables in the Kingdom of Self-Esteem
ages: infant - 8 years old
Self-esteem, values, character building
The title speaks for itself. By repeating the words "I am lovable" three times, one enters the kingdom of self-esteem. Once there, the "Lovable Team" introduces your child to the likes of "thankful Laura Lamb", "calm Gina Giraffe", "I am special Oscar Ostrich" and "cooperative Katie Kangaroo". Jessica and I hugged all the way through the book as we enjoyed the animals and their messages.

On the Day You Were Born
Birth and nature - particularly migrating animals
ages: infant - K years old
"On the eve of your birth ... the Earth and her creatures with the Sun and the Moon all moved in their places, each ready to greet you the very first moment of the very first day you arrived." Text like this and beautiful illustrations make this a lovely book to enjoy with your child. It will help children understand how each of us is received not just by our family, but by the universe and its gentle ways. Older children will enjoy the story, illustrations and references to migrating animals. A glossary in the back of the book gives a good understanding of each migrating animal mentioned in the book. Like all children, Jessica likes to hear the story about the day she was born. I believe this is a book that can be read to a child in the cradle, then enjoyed by both of you as the child grows.

Multicultural, ethnic diversity - ethnicity related to nature
This book reveals in verse that despite outward differences children everywhere are essentially the same and all are lovable. Text and photos relate the color of skin and the texture of hair to the colors of mother earth and animals in a soothing poetic fashion. These references give it a very earthy, holistic feel and celebrate the dazzling diversity in our children. Oil paints on canvas were used for the full-color illustrations that add a special warmth to the enjoyment of this book.(32 pgs.)

In a simply told tale children learn the value of truth. All the children of the land are given seeds to grow for the old emperor; unbeknownst to them the seeds are incapable of germinating. Ping is chosen to be the next emperor when he is the only one who has the courage to come before the ruler with the truth and, an empty pot. It is a good conversation starter about the truth, not fooling others and how, in the end, lies are almost always uncovered.

Recycling - imagination making toys from recycled items, Africa, Malawi
ages: preschool - 8 years old

This Reading Rainbow selection is a delight to read aloud to children. The "galimoto" is a push toy made by the little boy in the story using ingenuity and recycled items. I like it because it inspires creativity and as a reminder that we can make our own toys and cherish them as much if not more than ones purchased.

Mama Do You Love Me?
Unconditional love - Alaskan Inuit culture
ages: infant - K
Many of you may already be familiar with this touching story of unconditional love of a mother and child. It is told through the eyes of a little Inuit girl who wants to know if her mother will love her no matter what she does. Jessica loves to repeat the question and answer together, "Mama Do you love me" and "How Long" ,throughout the day and years since we first read it. We even use it as a reference when she is misbehaving -- as I remind her that inside is the Jessica we know and love, not the "polar bear" she is being, so she should find herself and bring her out again. I believe this is a book that can be read to a child in the cradle, then enjoyed by both of you as the child grows.

You may also enjoy the video which brings this story to life and gives more detail about the life of the Alaskan Inuits. Jessica loves this one before bed because it is so warm and relaxing. I understand that the DVD of this book has an interactive game on it -- that we have not tried.

The end pages picture plants of the rain forest and site a medicinal benefit. Today, soon-to-be-six-year-old Jessica picked up the book, flipped to the end pages and said, "Mommy, I want to know more about the medicines in the rain forest."
